It is no secret that Canadians, like me, are fiercely passionate about hockey. It is a sport that unites our entire nation, one which we feel no need to preface with the word ice because to Canadians, ice hockey is the only hockey. But when our NHL teams are out of the playoffs and our national teams are not busy winning gold medals, we have to direct our intensity elsewhere. The next most worthy recipient of our fervour is bacon.
For a country so in love with bacon, what could be more fitting than a restaurant bearing the name Bacon Nation?
Since 2012 the Bacon Nation food truck has brought one of Canada’s most revered foods (the other being poutine, of course) to hungry mouths all over the city of Toronto. It is only recently, however, that they put down roots and opened a Bacon Nation headquarters at 170 Spadina Avenue, just off Queen Street West.
Indulge your artistic side at the Queen West Art Crawl in September and enjoy sweet dreams in the Surreal Gourmet Room at the Gladstone Hotel.
When Bacon Nation says, “We make it our duty to bring you bacon in ways you love and never thought possible”, they’re not joking. Their mouth-watering menu is a veritable bible of bacon and some selections look heart-stopping, both literally and figuratively.
The Notorious P.I.G is one such example, a burger clearly marked for only true bacon lovers. In addition to an all-pork patty, it features two strips of bacon, peameal bacon (slightly sweet and oh-so Canadian), barbeque pulled pork, spring-mix lettuce, tomatoes, and onion straws, all sandwiched between a bacon-studded bun. Heavenly. If that’s not enough for you, you can satisfy your sweet and salty tooth with a Caramel Bacon Cheesecake or a Bacon Wrapped Mars Bar.
Welcome to Canada, everyone – did I happen to mention that we love bacon?
