Greetings from Budapest; wish you were here! If you were, you could also be relaxing at the Book Café on the iconic Andrássy Avenue and enjoying this delectable sour cherry pie with me.

In 2002 the World Heritage site of Budapest, the Banks of the Danube and the Buda Castle Quarter was extended to include Andrássy Avenue. The Book Café is located at number 39, on the first floor above the Alexandra bookstore. The building originally housed the grand Paris Department Store, and the café is now situated in a richly renovated hall with brilliant frescoes and beautiful chandeliers, both of which are accentuated by the soft, live piano music.

The stunning décor and rich ambiance can best be enjoyed when accompanied by a hot coffee and a heavenly slice of sour cherry pie. These tart little fruits aren’t always suitable to eat on their own, but with the addition of sugar, work well in just about every other lip-smacking creation; jam, ice cream, juice, compote, and of course, pie. So what do you say; should we meet in Budapest for a slice?
